PROJECT DETAILS
Location
Ballywater Wind Farm is located on the southeast coast of Ireland, between the villages of Kilmuckridge and Ballygarrett, in County Wexford.
Current Set up
Ballywater Wind Farm became operational in 2005 and comprises 21 Enercon E70 model wind turbines, standing at 99m tip-height, with a 70m rotor diameter and 64m hub height. Additionally, the farm includes associated hardstands and a crucial 110kV substation.
The 21 turbines are organized into two clusters: a smaller cluster of 4 turbines in the northeast and a larger cluster of 17 turbines in the southwest. The wind farm is connected to the national grid through an underground cable, which runs from the substation to the ESBN substation at Crane.
Planning Conditions & Extension Purpose
All components of the wind farm are already in place, and there are no plans to change the site layout, wind turbines, or related infrastructure in this application.
Our extension application solely focuses on extending the operational period. We commit to maintaining the existing wind farm layout and infrastructure without any modifications.
Environmental & Economic Benefits
In alignment with Ireland's Climate Action and Low Carbon Development Act, the Ballywater Wind Farm plays a crucial role in working towards achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 and reducing emissions by 51% by 2030. The country is seeking to reduce its dependence on imported fossil fuels to power homes and industries, favouring local generation of electricity from renewable sources like wind and solar.
The electricity generated by the Ballywater Wind Farm, rounding to 128,772 MWh, has the capacity to power around 30,660 Irish households annually, considering an average household consumption of 4.2MWh of electricity.
Ballywater holds national significance as a key producer of wind energy, actively aiming in achieving the targeted 51% emissions reduction. These emission cuts play a vital role in reducing Ireland's carbon footprint, resulting in improved air and water quality, reduced pollution, and mitigated environmental impacts.
Since it was commissioned, the Ballywater Wind Farm has been actively contributing toward these ambitious goals, and the Extension of Life application will facilitate its ongoing efforts in this direction.
Community Engagement
Ballywater Windfarm Ltd is currently undertaking a programme of community engagement activities to ensure the members of the local community are kept fully informed of developments regarding the application for an Extension of Life. We also aim to the residents the opportunity to ask any questions or raise any concerns they may have.
The operators of Ballywater Wind Farm are collaborating with Community Foundation Ireland to put in place a Community Benefit Fund that will run annually throughout the extended life of the windfarm. This fund is dependent on the approval of the Extension of Life and is earmarked for local community projects or initiatives benefiting the society.
Community Foundation Ireland comprises skilled professionals with two decades of expertise, engaging with a network of 5,000 non-profit organizations across Ireland, offering guidance, networks, and specialized knowledge.
